Sometimes we just need a little inspiration or encouragement to write – those times when we’re uncertain if the manuscript we’re working on is any good, the times when writer’s block hits. Here are some great tips to get the creative juices flowing (click the linked title for the full article):
• Apply technique learned from writing guides
Learn about specific structural and style flaws that can hamper your writing. Troll through books for suggestions about how to address such problems when revising.
• A real writer doesn’t quit
The moment you write – even if not a published author – you are a writer. The moment you stop, you cease to be one. And by “stop” I don’t mean pause for the day so you can sleep, cook or shower. I mean when you give up on writing, thinking you’ll never master the craft and that no one ever will read your work.
• Writers write for the same reasons readers read
Since the beginning of recorded history, people used stories to make sense of all that is. Ancient myths and epics often “explained” how something in nature originated or how to handle moral dilemmas. Today, we still tell stories to make sense of the universe, to connect with one another, to become part of something that is larger than they are in an effort to give them meaning and purpose.
• You must always be ready to write
To be a writer, one must write. With all of the modern world’s distractions – social media, the demands of work, a house to be cleaned, cell phone texts, a family that needs attention – finding time to write may not always be possible. Even if you set aside a quarter hour every day to write, interruptions may occur.
