• Improve your writing by dumping fuzzy words
Fuzzy words weaken your writing by giving an inexact, out-of-focus picture of the landscape or idea that you’re portraying. Examples of fuzzy words include almost, half- , very, really, seem, looked like, and felt.
• Avoid weak pushbutton words
Sometimes rather than finding a truly evocative term, writers get lazy and use pushbutton words. Pushbutton words attempt to evoke an emotional response from readers without appealing to their critical faculties or intellect.
• Coax readers to eat your story’s veggies
If you want to impress readers, give them a cookie. A term coined by CSFW’s David Smith, a cookie is some item in the text that rewards readers paying close attention to the story.
• What’s the difference between ‘mood’/’tone’?
Creating mood and tone involve a complex array of techniques that like include diction (word choice, sentence structure), narrative drive (pacing), and color (descriptive details). But what’s the difference between them?
• Select right word to avoid reader confusion
In any story you tell, your choice of words matters. Selecting the wrong word can lead to a number of problems that quickly turns off the reader to your writing.
