Good advice: Council vs. counsel vs. consul

Similar pronunciations often lead to confused spellings. Such is the case with these three words.

council is an administrative body, such as a city council. Hence, The Los Angeles City Council approved additional funding for its police force.

counsel is an attorney. The word also can serve as a verb meaning to give advice. Both a council and a counsel can counsel you.

consul is a diplomat who represents a government and helps his country’s citizens while in another nation. For example, San Dominican’s consul kept his American office in New York City.
