Self-Publishing Tips: How to Upload Your Ebook
For those new to self-publishing, uploading your ebook often is a complex and frustrating process. Unfamiliar terms are used, questions that you as an author have never thought of answering are asked, and when errors occur there’s often no real explanation as to how fix them. And while online “tutorials” are offered, the articles either state the obvious or appear to have been written by software engineers rather than someone who actually understands your plight. My book Upload Your Ebook to KindleDP corrects all of that. The explanations in this book make the process easy to understand and to follow. After all, you just want to get your book uploaded so it’s up for sale, not wonder if you wasted your time writing it because of error messages! SEE BOOK

Writing Tip: Don’t Burden Reader with a Self-indulgent Digression
Many writers pen stories to make a statement about an ethical or political issue. Authors sometimes are tempted to get on their soapbox rather than allow the message to unfold with the story. When a diatribe or rant is inserted in the story, the author is guilty of a self-indulgent digression. READ MORE

Self-Publishing Tip: Should You Format Your Book While Writing It?
Formatting when writing to a small degree makes some sense. Many authors want to get a feel for what their book will look like in print. Or perhaps to get a “head start” while waiting for a proofreading to be completed, they start formatting. Almost invariably, though, this actually creates more work. READ MORE

This Week’s Podcast: Place Easter Egg to Reward Careful Readers
Sometimes the real pleasure of writing – and reading – isn’t about a well-crafted tale with a fast-moving plot involving intriguing characters set in a well-described landscape. After all, penning such a story entails a lot of sweat, and for readers, they expect nothing less than a well-developed piece. Instead, the real smile comes when the author leaves a special treats for the reader, such as hiding some surprise not germane to the story. These surprises are called Easter eggs, a term science fiction writing workshops have borrowed from the jargon of computer programming. LISTEN TO PODCAST

Great Writing Quotes by Author Elizabeth Strout

I don’t think there was a particular book that made me want to write. They all did. I always wanted to write.

I do write by hand. … it’s a physical thing for me. It’s a bodily thing. It literally has to earn its way through my hand.

I love arranging the words and having them fall on the ear the right way and you know you’re not quite there and you’re redoing it and redoing it and there’s a wonderful thrill to it. But it is hard.

I’m writing for my ideal reader, for somebody who’s willing to take the time, who’s willing to get lost in a new world, who’s willing to do their part. But then I have to do my part and give them a sound and a voice that they believe in enough to keep going.

Without a doubt my mother was an inspiration for my writing. This is true in many ways, but mostly because she is a wonderful storyteller, without even knowing it.

Hint at Story’s Theme in Opening Lines – Inventing Reality’s Newsletter for April 29, 2025

Plotting Your Book: Hint at Story’s Theme in Opening Lines
Even the most action-packed, blood-and-gore story has some message or point. A proposition that is argued or an aspect of human experience that is examined in your story is its theme. For example, the theme of the novel Moby Dick is revenge and obsession. Those dual passions and their costs are explored as Captain Ahab hunts and tries to destroy the great white whale that bit off his leg. You want to hint at your theme on your opening page.  READ MORE

Self-Publishing Tip: How to Design Your Ebook Cover
Most potential readers of your ebook will first encounter it online as an image – the book’s cover. If that thumbnail doesn’t cause viewers to take a closer look at the accompanying text descriptions of your book, you are farther away from making a sale. How do you create an ebook cover? My new book Design Your Ebook Cover answers that question. Using easy to understand and short explanations, it describes what software/apps you need, moves on to the cover’s various elements, and finally looks at uploading it to a print on demand company like Kindle Direct Publishing. Writing Tip: Show Don’t Tell when Writing Story Dialogue

Book Marketing Tip: Increase Book Sales by Giving Away First in Series

Life has brought Ed Wilson to a point he never would have anticipated, and he’s not particularly pleased with the present state of affairs. Great Writing Quotes by Author Becca Puglisi

The one common thread in all of the books that are falling apart on my shelf? Characters – flawed ones with desires and needs who spend most of the story tripping over their weaknesses in an effort to get what they want.

Throughout the ages, story has been used to guide and teach, allowing us to pass on important information, ideas, and beliefs in many different forms.

Writing is hard. How’s that for a downer first thing in the morning? But it’s true—particularly when it comes to finding time to write. There are so many necessary tasks—marketing, networking, running a business, etc.—fighting for your time. And then, once you do get down to the planning, drafting, or revising you’ve been longing to do…

As readers, what inspires empathy for the hero and makes us root for him? His flaws? His admirable qualities? His hopeless circumstances? Yes, to all of the above. But none of these elements would be effective without a worthy villain to complicate matters.

This is the real purpose of the antagonist: to make things unlivable…

Self-Publishing Tip: Pay Attention to Your Author’s Bio Pic
One of the elements of a self-published book that shouldn’t be overlooked is the author’s photograph. While the photo often is a thumbnail or even smaller, it can subtly affect a reader’s decision to purchase your book. A blurry or a pixelated photo suggests (rightly or wrongly) that the rest of the book is unprofessional; a photo that makes you look mean or physically unappealing tells the reader that you’re creepy and so probably is your book. Further, the author’s bio pic can appear in a number of spots – the back cover, next to the author’s bio at the book’s end, on your website, on web pages selling or promoting your book (such as Amazon.com and Goodreads) and probably elsewhere. Great Writing Quotes by Author Voltaire

Writing is the painting of the voice.

The secret of being a bore is to tell everything.

The adjective is the enemy of the noun. Variant: The adjective is the enemy of the substantive.

… I detest what you write, but I would give my life to make it possible for you to continue to write.

You can never correct your work well until you have forgotten it.

Anything too stupid to be said is sung.

The multiplicity of facts and writings is become so great that everything must soon be reduced to extracts and dictionaries.

The only reward to be expected from literature is contempt if one fails and hatred if one succeeds.

To hold a pen is to be at war.

Writing Tip: Consider Using Counterplotting in Your Novel
One solid plotting strategy for a long novel – though it also will work in a novella or a long short story – is to split the main characters into two groups and alternate the focus of scenes or chapters between them. Self-Publishing Tip: Potential Disclaimers for Your Title Page
Sometimes when self-publishing a book, you’ll want to include a disclaimer on your title page. A disclaimer is a legal-sounding statement that aims to protect you from lawsuits by saying that you are not liable or responsible for anything the reader does as a consequence of reading your advice. For example, if a reader follows first-aid tips you provide in a hiking book, you might run a disclaimer that releases you from responsibility for any injuries that occur after a reader has attempted to follow your guidelines. Client Spotlight: “Abe’s Journey” by Tom Weiss
A recent editing client of mine, Tom Weiss, has published his second novel, “Abe’s Journey.” Abe Souder has always followed the path before him—never questioning where it led. Raised in a world where faith and tradition shape every decision, he accepted his place without hesitation. But when a tragic loss unsettles the life he’s always known, long-buried doubts begin to rise, forcing him to confront the questions he’s never been willing to face. Looking for answers in places he would never have dared, Abe steps beyond the familiar, drawn into a world that challenges everything he thought he knew. Each step forward brings him closer to truths about himself, his past, and his future—and forces him to question not just where he belongs but who he is. Faced with choices that could change his life forever, Abe must ask himself the most challenging question: Was he ever truly sure of the life he was living—or has doubt left him staring into a future just as uncertain? Great Writing Quotes by Author Grace Paley

Write from what you know into what you don’t know.

Write what will stop your breath if you don’t write.

… plot, the absolute line between two points which I’ve always despised. Not for literary reasons, but because it takes all hope away. Everyone, real or invented, deserves the open destiny of life.

The best training is to read and write, no matter what. Don’t live with a lover or roommate who doesn’t respect your work. Don’t lie, buy time, borrow to buy time. Write what will stop your breath if you don’t write.

People will sometimes say, “Why don’t you write more politics?” And I have to explain to them that writing the lives of women IS politics.

I might write four lines or I might write twenty. I subtract and I add until I really hit something I want to do. You don’t always whittle down, sometimes you whittle up.

You become a writer because you need to become a writer – nothing else.

My language limitations here are real. My vocabulary is adequate for writing notes and keeping journals but absolutely useless for an active moral life. If I really knew this language, there would surely be in my head, as there is in Webster’s or the Dictionary of American Slang, that unreducible verb designed to tell a person like me what to do next.

…I go through a story for lies. I might discover the lie of trying to show off. Sometimes they’re lies of character. Sometimes they are lies of writing the most beautiful sentence in the world that has nothing to do with the story.

To translate a poem from thinking into English takes all night.

Great Writing Quotes by Author G.K. Chesterton

A good novel tells us the truth about its hero; but a bad novel tells us the truth about its author.

Once I planned to write a book of poems entirely about the things in my pocket. But I found it would be too long; and the age of the great epics is past.

Literature is a luxury; fiction is a necessity.

In matters of truth the fact that you don’t want to publish something is, nine times out of ten, a proof that you ought to publish it.

But those dealing in the actual manufacture of mind are dealing in a very explosive material. The material is not merely the clay of which man is master, but the truths or semblances of truth which have a certain mastery over man. The material is explosive because it must be taken seriously. The men writing books really are throwing bombs.

You could compile the worst book in the world entirely out of selected passages from the best writers in the world.

Artistic temperament is the disease that afflicts amateurs.

I suppose everyone must have reflected how primeval and how poetical are the things that one carries in one’s pocket; the pocket-knife, for instance, the type of all human tools, the infant of the sword. Once I planned to write a book of poems entirely about things in my pockets. But I found it would be too long; and the age of the great epics is past.

What the world wants, what the world is waiting for, is not Modern Poetry or Classical Poetry or Neo-Classical Poetry – but Good Poetry. And the dreadful disreputable doubt, which stirs in my own skeptical mind, is doubt about whether it would really matter much what style a poet chose to write in, in any period, as long as he wrote Good poetry.
